And along the way...

 We've turned into bird watchers:

And a couple of "La Cucarachas"

When we rented our car, the rental agency noticed that my driver's license expires at the end of the month. Normally that is not a big deal because everything is online, but it was also time to renew my photo, which must be done in person. Unfortunately the 1-800 number doesn't work here, but fortunately our phone plan here allowed a direct 306 call and I was able to get a 90-day extension.  Whew! Nothing like driving around with an expired license in a foreign country. At one point I thought of using this one from the Alien Restaurant here in town:

We've been looking at real estate here - as part of the whole holiday plan.  There are lots of properties for sale.  People from our travels elsewhere keep telling us: It's easy to buy, but difficult to sell. I think it's good we are down here for a while just to see if it's something we can imagine ourselves doing. So far the answer is, "Ugh?" Our neighbors here at Lake Gardens, Rob and Dawn from Florida, have already bought property. It's a start-from-scratch mountain top. We follow their adventures closely as they navigate through their long term adventure.

The Farmers Market here is held in a large open warehouse.  We were spending like drunken sailors: Peanut butter, Butter Chicken, Lasagna, lots of spices.  Lots of fun actually and it didn't turn out to be all that expensive. Support local!

We attended a Gringo breakfast last Thursday, and Rudy and Judy promptly invited us to play Canasta in the afternoon.  Again another couple from the Divided States of America, this time Texas. And again a near vertical climb up a washboard 1 km drive at less than 10 km/hr in first gear to get to their stunning view! New Canasta rules again:  the most curious "Take 7" rule: instead of pack picking you are only allowed to take 7 cards from the top - given to you by the previous player. The hosts call our "take the entire pile" Crying Canasta because the opponents are crying when you pack pick. They feed birds too (Magpie Jay):

Myra spotted an armadillo! A little pig-like beast that roots the soil just like, well, a pig.

This contraption was the first offer our car rental company thought we'd enjoy (just kidding).

Thanks for catching up with us.  Merry Christmas!

  1. A belated Merry Christmas. The pace of life is slower but the driving is challenging, from the sounds of it. Keep your witty blog going....you provide me with wonderful giggles.
